Description

The journey begins through endless reed mazes until reaching the vastness of lake Sloka for relaxation. Afterwards, we continue boating along the narrow and winding course of the river.

Vecslocene is the historical continuation of the Slocene river. Historically, Vecslocene was part of the neighbourhood’s shipping route, connecting the Kaņieris and Valgums lakes with the Lielupe river.

Today, part of the river is located within the Ķemeri National Park. The river is one of the small rivers, where the water level varies depending on the season and rainfall. Officially, the maximum depth of the Vecslocene river is only 1.1m, while the average depth is 60cm. It is no longer possible to replicate the ancient shipping route, as most watercourses have been altered because of economic activity – the peat bogs in the area have been drained and modified for peat extraction, the course of the Slocene and Vecslocene has been changed, Vēršupīte in the upper reaches and Ķemeri has been regulated, etc.

Vecslocene is best boatable in spring or autumn, when there are fewer weeds, grasses and leaves. In summer it is boatable, but the route becomes a jungle survival game – adventurers might like it, but it is no longer a mid-summer relaxing boat trip. The amount of water in the river also plays a role.
