The Great Ķemeri bog
The Great Ķemeri Bog is one of the largest moss bogs on the Latvian coast, covering an area of 5000 hectares. It is about 8000 years old and is characterized by a labyrinth of elongated lakes, which give it a special scenic beauty. It is also an important breeding site for several rare bog bird species and an important resting place for migratory species, especially cranes.
A peat quarry was started on the eastern edge of the Ķemeri Bog in the Soviet era, but after the year 2000, when the bog restoration project was implemented, it was flooded. The flooded part has developed into a maze of channels and islands, forming a unique and unusual landscape. The bog lake has a varied landscape, with low grass bogs, transitional bogs and plants, shrubs and trees typical of high moss bogs. The views during the day and at sunsets and sunrises are truly breathtaking!
The route is navigable throughout the whole season. From 15.08. a restriction on sunset and sunrise trips is in effect in the Great Kemeri bog!
