Description
A unique opportunity to paddle down the Svēte River in summer, which is usually impossible due to the water level!
We invite you to take a boat trip along the Svēte river from Vētras to Kalna Būriņi in Jelgava, with a rest break at Svēte castle!
The Svēte river is one of the most popular small river routes near Jelgava, but it is only navigable at high water levels in spring, in summer there is too little water and the river becomes overgrown. The river has wider ponds interspersed with narrow rapids, and the banks are covered by reeds in many places.
The Svēte river starts in Šiauliai, Lithuania, and for a 2 km stretch near Žagares, the Svete is the border river between Latvia and Lithuania. From the Lithuanian border the river flows through a ~10 m deep valley, after Augstkalne the valley becomes narrower and shallower, further down to Lielupe the bed is wide and shallow. Many parts of the river are drained, the floodplains in the lower reaches are enclosed by dams.
Of the 80 km of rivers on the Latvian side, up to 30 km are navigable. In Jelgava, the river curves around the city and flows along its outskirts – along private houses and small gardens, and finally the Svēte meets the Lielupe River.
